Ganderbal Locals Demand Urgent Repairs of Rezan-Gagangeer Road

The stretch, which previously formed part of the National Highway, was demoted in importance following the opening of the new Sonamarg Tunnel. Since then, locals say, it has been ignored by authorities, including the Border Roads Organisation (BRO)—the agency responsible for its maintenance.

Road in Ruins: Craters, Potholes, and Daily Hazards

Speaking to Newsly Wire, residents highlighted the dangers of commuting on the route, especially during rains. The road is riddled with deep potholes, broken patches, and eroded edges, making it a serious safety hazard.

“Driving on this road is a daily struggle. It’s a nightmare when it rains,” said one resident. “Our kids’ school buses, emergency vehicles, and business transportation are all suffering.”

Call for Action from BRO

Locals argue that while the road may no longer serve as the main access to Sonamarg, it still plays a critical role in local travel and tourism-related traffic.

They are now urging the BRO to immediately start repairs and macadamisation, warning that continued neglect could isolate the area and endanger lives.

“This is about more than inconvenience—it’s a question of safety and economic survival,” said another concerned local.

Residents hope their pleas will prompt swift government action. Until then, the road continues to pose a daily challenge for those who rely on it.
