According to news agency JKNS, CM Omar said the Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians, has deeply wounded the people of Jammu and Kashmir but has also brought them together against terrorism.

“It is still unbelievable that just a few days ago we were here discussing the budget,” Omar Abdullah said emotionally. “Who could have thought that we would meet again under such heartbreaking circumstances?”

He thanked the Assembly Speaker for holding a special session, noting that no other Parliament or state assembly in India could feel the pain like the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly does.

Omar Abdullah highlighted that many Assembly members had personally lost family members in the attack. “In front of you sit people who have lost sisters, brothers, fathers, and uncles,” he said, reading out the names of the 26 victims with respect.

Calling the Pahalgam incident “the biggest attack on civilians in 21 years,” Omar said, “As the former Tourism Minister, I had invited these tourists here. It was my responsibility to keep them safe.”

He shared the heartbreaking story of a child who saw his father lying in blood and asked, “What could I tell that child?” he said, showing the emotional toll the tragedy has taken.

However, CM Omar found hope in the unity shown by the local people. “From Shikara boatmen to fruit sellers and auto-rickshaw drivers, everyone helped the tourists selflessly,” he said. Even Srinagar’s historic Jamia Masjid held two minutes of silence, a rare and emotional moment that he said only Kashmiris could truly understand.

Addressing students and Kashmiris living outside the region, he acknowledged the difficulties they are facing and thanked other state governments for protecting them. He announced plans to build a system where Kashmiri students can register complaints in times of crisis.

Omar Abdullah also warned media outlets against spreading fake news, saying, “Do not add to the people’s suffering with lies and rumors.”

In a powerful ending, CM Omar made it clear that he would not use the tragedy for political gain. “After Pahalgam, with what face can I ask for statehood? Is my politics so cheap?” he said. He stressed that the demand for Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood would continue at the right time, but not by using the deaths of innocent people.

The entire Assembly stood united in grief, showing the strength and resilience of Kashmir in this dark time.
